Cassie, played by Justice, is high-energy from the outset, with a trying-on-clothes montage that only exists in movies. “I have to ring in 25 with style!” she says to her roommate and lifelong best friend, Lisa (Midori Francis), as she dances around the living room in a pink tulle skirt and rhinestone necklace. However, one gets the impression that vacuous Cassie rang in the previous years in style as well, and the introverted Lisa’s relative stillness makes you wonder how they’ve managed to stay so close for so long. “I can’t have any distractions right now,” the young archaeologist argues, saying that she’s examining dinosaur marsupial teeth, a detail that’s been overlooked.
As Cassie downs shots on top of the bar and Lisa feels left out, a blow-up on their big night out exposes the divide between the besties. “Do you realize how bad these guys are?” Cassie’s new friends, according to Lisa. “When you’re among them, you’re different.” She has a point, and Francis’ sincerity and soulfulness make you wish she was in the middle of the movie rather than on the sidelines.
