Melissa McCarthy and her partner, Ben Falcone, have reunited for a new film. Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer star in Thunder Force as two estranged best friends who reunite after one of them develops a serum that grants ordinary people superpowers. Jason Bateman, Cobby Cannavale, Pom Klementieff, and Falcone also star in the film (who also directed and wrote it).
According to Kate Erbland of IndieWire, Melissa McCarthy’s character had some texture, but the rest of the movie lacked any sense of imagination or pizzazz. She chastised Falcone (I’m seeing a trend here) for refusing to accept his film’s silliness, claiming that his subplot is so uninteresting that the audience will overlook it. Erbland went on to say: Thunder Force isn’t smart enough to break new ground in the superhero genre, and it’s also not silly enough to mine its source material for the kinds of jokes that would distinguish it.
Entertainment Weekly’s Maureen Lee Lenker gave the film a much more favorable review. She thinks Jason Bateman’s performance as The Crab (yes, his arms are crab claws) is the funniest part of the film, and that it’s an amusing film with plenty of laughs. She wrote, ” Thunder Force is laden with promise when it comes to stories of women saving the world (or even just Chicago), but it falls short of the whole with great power comes great responsibility mandate. Even if it isn’t super-powered, it is still an eccentric fun time.
