It reminded us early on of what we couldn’t accomplish, what we were putting off or canceling. Watching celebrities like Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon eat and drink their way across Greece was a weird mix of nostalgia and resentment. Perhaps that’s why “Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” a surreal and fantastical comedy, appealed to so many people. It was just surreal enough to be entertaining while also being ridiculous enough to be cathartic. Then there was “The White Lotus,” a dark comedy set in a posh Hawaiian resort that appealed to some deep-seated superiority of not being “those people” on one level.
Vacation Friends, a long-gestating idea about a pair of mismatched couples who click on vacation that has starred everyone from Chris Pratt to Ice Cube, is the most recent entry. In March 2020, it eventually began filming, with Lil Rel Howery, John Cena, Yvonne Orji, and Meredith Hagner forming the foursome. It was a bad omen. Despite the delays, recasting, rewrites (Tom Mullen, Tim Mullen, Jonathan Goldstein, John Francis Daley, and director Clay Tarver all share writer credits), and the strangeness of filming in a pandemic, “Vacation Friends” turned out to be a really enjoyable experience.
